CaliBudz

► The Brief

Calibudz needed a stronger, cleaner and more scalable ecommerce platform for its UK-based online headshop. The business already had a recognisable brand and a wide product range across CBD flower, CBG flower, legal cannabinoid alternatives, vapes, edibles, oils, extracts, concentrates and wholesale products, but the site needed refinement to improve user flow, product visibility, SEO performance and overall brand consistency.

The client wanted Calibudz to feel like a premium digital dispensary, with bold visuals, clearer product categories and a smoother shopping experience for both casual buyers and bulk customers. The brief was not simply to make small cosmetic changes. The site needed a proper audit, strategic corrections, collection improvements, cleaner navigation, better homepage structure and stronger SEO foundations across the product catalogue.

A major part of the project was the integration of Big Hippo, a start-up brand that had recently been acquired and merged into Calibudz. Rather than running two competing websites, the client wanted Big Hippo redirected into the better-performing Calibudz site. This meant handling a large redirect migration properly, protecting SEO value, reducing broken links and ensuring customers landed on the most relevant Calibudz pages.

The client also needed help tightening up category structure, product naming, vendor tags, homepage priorities and trust signals. The goal was to create a more professional ecommerce experience that would support growth in the UK legal cannabis alternatives market, while keeping the brand clear, polished and easier to manage going forward.

► What We Built

Calibudz is a UK-based online headshop offering premium legal cannabis alternatives across CBD, CBG, HHC, H4CBD, THCP and THCA products. The site covers a broad ecommerce range including flower, vapes, edibles, extracts, concentrates, oils, tinctures, isolates, distillates and wholesale products.

The platform was already positioned as a digital dispensary, but it needed a more refined structure to support stronger product visibility, better customer flow, improved SEO performance and a cleaner brand experience. The work focused on turning Calibudz into a more professional, scalable and commercially focused ecommerce website, while also handling the full integration of the acquired Big Hippo brand.

The project covered collection creation, SEO optimisation, redirect handling, navigation improvements, homepage restructuring, product title clean-up, vendor consistency, trust signal improvements and ongoing technical monitoring. The result was a sharper, more organised platform designed to perform better for both retail customers and bulk buyers.

Project Overview

The Calibudz project focused on improving the structure, usability and search performance of the site while completing the full transition of Big Hippo into the main Calibudz platform. Rather than splitting traffic, products and SEO value across two competing websites, the acquired Big Hippo brand was redirected into Calibudz to strengthen one main ecommerce destination.

The work was carried out across key areas of the site, including product collections, homepage layout, menu structure, collection pages, product naming, vendor data, trust presentation and redirect management. Every change was made with the same goal in mind: to make the site easier to browse, easier to understand and easier for search engines to crawl correctly.

Calibudz now has a clearer customer journey, stronger category structure and a more consistent brand presentation. The platform is better placed to support future growth in the UK legal cannabis alternatives market, with a stronger foundation for SEO, wholesale enquiries, customer trust and product discovery.

SEO Collection Build

A full set of ecommerce collections was created and optimised to improve product visibility across the site. These collections were designed around real customer search intent, helping users find specific product types more easily while giving search engines clearer category signals.

Collections created and optimised included:

  • CBD Flower
  • CBG Flower
  • H4CBD Flower
  • Water Soluble CBD
  • Water Soluble CBG
  • CBD Oil
  • Oil & Tinctures
  • CBD Vape Pens
  • H4CBD Vape Pens
  • HHC Vape Pens
  • HHCP Vape Pens
  • THCP Vape Pens
  • THCA Vape Pens
  • Vape Pens
  • CBD Shatter
  • CBD Raw Paste
  • Hash
  • Edibles
  • CBD Chocolate
  • Cookies
  • Gummies
  • Drinks
  • Distillates
  • Isolates
  • Shake
  • Organic Kief
  • Terpenes
  • Hemp Oil
  • Accessories
  • Wholesale

Each collection was built with a full SEO suite, including an optimised category description, a focused meta title, a properly sized meta description, a clean keyword-rich URL and tailored image direction. This gave the catalogue a stronger structure and helped the site target a wider range of high-intent product searches.

Big Hippo Migration and Redirect Work

A major part of the project was merging Big Hippo into the stronger Calibudz platform. This required careful redirect planning to protect as much SEO value as possible, reduce broken links and make sure users arriving from old Big Hippo URLs landed on relevant Calibudz pages.

A total of 2,458 manual 301 redirects were created from the Shopify export and added directly into the SiteGround server’s .htaccess file. This helped preserve traffic flow, reduce dead links and guide both visitors and search engines into the correct areas of the Calibudz site.

The migration was also set up for ongoing monitoring through Ahrefs, allowing crawl errors, broken links and redirect issues to be checked after launch. As with any large redirect project, changes can take time to fully settle in search engines, so the site was monitored carefully during the transition period.

Homepage and Navigation Improvements

The homepage was refined to focus attention on the strongest commercial categories. Product rows were adjusted to prioritise CBD Flower, Vape Pens and Isolates, helping visitors reach the key areas of the store faster.

Lower-priority categories, such as packaging and secondary product groups, were removed from the main homepage spotlight. This gave the page a cleaner commercial focus and helped reduce distraction for new visitors.

The header menu was also reworked into a more product-focused structure. Unnecessary clutter was removed, while Vape Pens were given their own top-level category with clear submenus for H4CBD, HHC, THCP, THCA and HHCP. Hemp Oil and Hemp Products were also merged into a clearer unified category, with redirects added where needed.

Collection Page and User Experience Improvements

The collection page experience was improved to make browsing easier and reduce drop-off. Product pagination was increased to show 50 items per page, allowing customers to view more of the catalogue without constantly clicking through smaller page sets.

This change made the shopping journey smoother, especially across larger categories where users want to compare products quickly. It also helped create a more practical browsing experience for returning customers and bulk buyers who already know what they are looking for.

Alongside the pagination update, the overall category structure was tightened so collections felt more deliberate and easier to navigate. This improved the user journey while also supporting stronger search relevance across the product catalogue.

Product Title and Brand Clean-Up

Product titles were reviewed and cleaned to improve clarity, consistency and SEO performance. Unnecessary supplier references were removed from flower titles, giving products cleaner names that better match how customers search.

For example, titles such as “Fortune Flavours Lemon Haze UK Strain CBD Flower” were simplified into clearer, more search-friendly formats such as “Lemon Haze CBD Flower UK Strain”. This made the catalogue look cleaner while also improving keyword placement.

Vendor and brand tags were also reviewed across the site. Inconsistent tags such as supplier names, legacy labels and mixed brand references were cleaned or removed where needed. Retail products were aligned under Calibudz, Big Hippo or the correct specialist brand, giving the store a more consistent and professional ecommerce structure.

Visual and Trust Improvements

Visual refinements were made to help the site feel more polished and retail-ready. Trustpilot branding was added to the footer in a clean, centre-aligned white box style, giving customers a clearer trust signal while browsing the site.

Product imagery was also improved where needed. Flower images were edited to remove distracting elements, helping isolate the product visuals and create a cleaner catalogue presentation.

The homepage banners and layout were adjusted around higher-impact categories, giving the site a stronger first impression and a more focused route into the main product lines. These changes helped Calibudz feel less cluttered and more like a premium digital dispensary.

Technical and Usability Fixes

Several smaller but important fixes were made across the site to improve consistency and usability. This included correcting product wording issues, cleaning up incorrect tags and reviewing category relationships to prevent confusing product placement.

A typo in “Myla” was corrected to “Mylar”, and inconsistent vendor data was reviewed across the catalogue. Supplier names were removed from titles and metadata unless they were genuinely useful for specialist products such as branded vape devices.

These corrections helped make the site easier to manage, easier to shop and more consistent from an SEO point of view. Small fixes like these matter on ecommerce websites because they affect customer confidence, search clarity and long-term catalogue quality.

Strategic Improvements and Next Steps

The work also included forward-facing recommendations to help Calibudz continue improving after the main build and migration work. Email list growth was highlighted as an important opportunity, with stronger sign-up points recommended across the customer journey.

Content and SEO were also identified as key areas for ongoing growth. Regular blog content, product reviews and video integration can help strengthen search visibility, improve engagement and give customers more useful information before buying.

Wholesale growth was another important area. A dedicated wholesale landing page was recommended to support bulk buyers, trade enquiries and exclusive wholesale perks. This would give Calibudz a clearer route for larger orders while keeping retail and wholesale journeys properly separated.

Outcome

The Calibudz project successfully transformed the site into a more professional, scalable and user-friendly ecommerce platform. The work improved product visibility, strengthened category structure, cleaned up branding, refined the homepage, simplified navigation and completed the full Big Hippo migration into the main Calibudz website.

With 2,458 redirects added, key collections optimised, product titles cleaned, trust signals improved and the site structure tightened, Calibudz now has a stronger foundation for future growth. The platform is better suited to retail customers, bulk buyers and search engines, giving the brand a clearer and more commercially focused online presence.

The finished result is a sharper ecommerce experience that supports the Calibudz brand, protects the value of the Big Hippo acquisition and gives the business a stronger base in the UK legal cannabis alternatives market.
