Some websites just need a tidy-up. Others have been quietly getting older for so long that the only sensible thing to do is start again. The site for LIFE School of Motoring, a driving school that has been teaching learners around Weston-super-Mare, Bristol and North Somerset for over 20 years, was firmly in the second camp. Some of its pages dated back to 2010.
Here’s what we found, what we changed, and why it matters for a small local business.
What we inherited
The site still worked, more or less, but it was showing its age everywhere you looked:
- Eight plugins doing jobs that didn’t need doing, including a Facebook fan box and a Twitter widget from a different era of the internet, a separate contact form plugin with its own CAPTCHA, and the Classic Editor kept alive for old content.
- Three themes installed, with the live one leaning on a companion plugin just to hold its layout together.
- PHP 7.4, which stopped getting security updates years ago.
- A blurry logo, old page text and no real structure for search engines to work with.
None of that is unusual. Most small business sites we take over look like this, because they were built once and then left alone while the web moved on around them.
What we built
A theme of its own
We built a lightweight theme just for LIFE, keeping the navy and magenta look people already knew, and redrew the logo so it’s sharp on every screen. No page builder, no companion plugin, nothing loading that the page doesn’t use.
Every page rewritten
All seven main pages were rewritten from the old text, keeping what was true and useful and adding proper answers to the questions learners and parents actually ask, from prices to under 17s lessons.
SEO built in, not bolted on
Rather than adding an SEO plugin, the theme handles it directly: page titles and descriptions, social sharing previews, a sitemap, structured data that tells Google it’s a driving school (with FAQs, breadcrumbs and blog posts marked up properly), and IndexNow so new pages get noticed quickly.
A contact form that just works
Enquiries now come through the site’s own form, are saved in WordPress so nothing gets lost in an inbox, and are emailed straight to the school.
A blog with real advice
The new blog covers the things learners search for: how many lessons you need, theory test tips, beating nerves, what happens on test day and life after you pass. It gives the site fresh, useful content and gives the school something genuinely helpful to share.
Up to date underneath
We cleared out the old plugins and themes, kept backups of everything we removed, and moved the site from PHP 7.4 to PHP 8.5, checking every page afterwards.
Why this matters for a small business
For a driving school, the website is often the first lesson. A parent looking for an instructor for their 17 year old, or a nervous adult who has finally decided to learn, will make a judgement in seconds. A fast, clear, modern site that answers their questions and makes it easy to get in touch is worth more than any amount of advertising.
It’s also safer. Old plugins and old PHP versions are exactly what attackers go looking for, and every one we removed is one less thing to go wrong.
If your own site has been quietly getting older in the background, get in touch. We’ll tell you honestly whether it needs a tidy-up or a fresh start.
